Story 1
She got one text at 2:13 A.M. And it was from her mother... who died three years ago.
At 2:13 A.M.,
Maya’s phone lit up with a text from a number she had not seen in three years. Her mother’s number.
Her hands went cold before she even opened it.
Three words sat on the screen.
“Don’t trust Daniel.”
Maya stared at the message, her pulse thundering in her ears. Her mother had died in a car accident. Closed casket. No goodbye. No explanation that ever made sense. So seeing that name again felt impossible. Like grief had learned how to type.
Daniel was her fiancé.
She looked across the dark apartment at the sleeping man she had planned to marry in eleven days. The man who held her when she cried. The man who knew every broken piece of her life. The man her mother had never trusted.
The next morning, Maya tried to laugh it off. Maybe it was a prank. Maybe a wrong number. But then she noticed something sitting on the kitchen table.
An old silver key.
She knew that key.
Her mother had worn it on a chain until the day she died.
Inside the key ring, taped to the metal, was a note in her mother’s handwriting.
“Open the box under the floor in my old room.”
Maya drove to her childhood home shaking the entire way. The house smelled the same. Dust, roses, and silence. In her mother’s bedroom, she found the loose floorboard exactly where the note had said.
Under it was a locked wooden box.
When she opened it, she felt the air leave her lungs.
Photos. Receipts. Bank records. And one final envelope with her name on it.
Inside was a handwritten confession.
Her mother had not died in an accident.
She had been trying to run.
Run from Daniel.
Run from a lie that started before Maya was born.
The confession said Daniel was not just her fiancé. He had been inside their lives for years. Watching. Waiting. Using Maya to get close to the one thing her mother had hidden for decades.
A child.
Maya’s stomach twisted as she read the last line.
“If you are reading this, he found you first.”
Behind her, the floor creaked.
She turned slowly.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
And in his hand was Maya’s phone.
